The Final Curtain (for this blog)

Here it is, the last post in this blog.

I’ve already created a new account on LiveJournal and will be posting there from now on.

As I said before, my usual usernames Aquatix and Force_Gaia were already taken so I had to invent something new.

The new address is:
http://the-code-monkey.livejournal.com/
And like I said it’s “new” not “original”.

It’s taken from the fact that for the foreseeable future I'll be grinding through lines of code, and although I'm good at it compared to those at school, i probably won’t be in university. It’s also from Jonathon Coulton’s Hit song of the same name (he’s the genius behind GLaDOS’s “Still Alive” from Portal)

So anyway, It’s time to let this blog rot, and move onto “This is a Code Monkey’s life” in LiveJournal

See you there

Out in style

Here it is. the penultimate entry to this blog. The prom.

I thought I’d write this while events were still fresh in my mind, which explains the late posting.

I got there about half an hour early, but sat in my mum’s car until more people turned up, then waited with them for the event to begin. At the same time I was also waiting for the limo carrying dale, Simon, James and Ben just to see what they got for the amount of money they spent on it; I was seriously considering joining them at one point, but declined as I thought the time-money ratio wasn’t worth it, and I didn’t have that much cash anyway. I turned out that Ben was already half-pissed when he got out the limo, as I got reports that he had downed a bottle and a half of champagne; this theme carried on throughout the night.

When we finally went in, we sat at the tables for a while just generally chatting, with the main topic being alcohol and what Ben was going to turn out like at the end.

When the food came my table was thankful for having me around, as I was the only one there who knew the proper formal eating routine, as I just stopped James using his pudding spoon in his soup. The food in itself wasn’t excellent. I started with the tomato and basil soup, this was the highlight of the meal for me as it all went downhill from here. Next was the “supreme of chicken”, one word which did not describe it was “supreme”; all I was presented with was a chicken breast on top of a ratatouille-type substance with a gravy and veg (the veg in themselves were a disgrace, as I would have thought that the hotel would have used more seasonal vegetables rather then the more wintery Swede, carrots and sprouts). For desert I had the toffee cheesecake, it was rubbery at the very least, and wasn’t even a toffee cheesecake as it was only a plain cheesecake with a toffee sauce.

After the food had gone it was time for the speeches and leavers video. Part of me knew I would get at least one mention, but the other half hoped I wouldn’t. I was home free until Mr. Finn’s speech on the DVD, where he mentioned me (but laughter drowned out what he was saying about me) and then was followed my him and Mr. birch “testing” my project, my only comment to this was that it had better still be operational when I come to get it in November.

The disco then followed. The starting song was a bit of a surprise to me, as disco’s usually start with pop then just fling “The Time Warp” in somewhere between then and the end, although when I heard the intro I wasn’t best pleased, as the version the DJ played was an abomination. As a rule “The time warp” is a male-female duet, usually sung by Richard O'Brian and Patricia Quinn (or whoever played Riff-Raff and Magenta in the on-stage version), but the version played was the abysmal cover by Damian. Nonetheless I still got up and danced the time warp the way it should be done.

Between then and the end I only danced a couple more times, both to songs I requested. Both went down well and are the sort of song’s that you hate to admit that you love, the cheesy party songs: “The Cha Cha Slide” and “YMCA”

I decided that near the end I was going to make a spectacle of myself one last time, and got up onto the raised bit of stage in front of the DJ and did the YMCA in front of everyone along with a few others, and I will say now that as I was doing the dance I was stone-cold sober, as I’m a non-drinker by principal, having only had J2Os and Coke the whole night.

Later today I’ll be writing the sign off and setting up the next blog that will last over the summer and end in September.

Starting the final sign-off

It stands to reason that as this is “the blog of a trinity 6th former” it should come to an end when my time at 6th form does. So I'm going to say now that I’ll ignore this blog after the Prom (after writing a final blog about it and then a final sign-off)

I’ll then start a new one on Live Journal, as I’m using that more than ever now for other reasons, and leave this one to rot like i did the old MSN spaces one, although i will link back to them if i can. (but could i care less about past blogs that I'm no longer writing to? the answer: no and neither does anyone else, so i might not bother)

I haven't decided on my nickname for that blog yet, as i know already that Aquatix and Force_Gaia are taken (yes, I’ve already tried them and it appears that they weren't as original and unique as i thought they would be)

I might try and make this next one last a bit longer, and also make more regular entries, as this one kept suffering spurts of entries rather than a continuous flow. (although it does depend on my workload)

It should also have a more optimistic outlook on things, rather than the “I've had some shit recently” like this one did (how long that will last is anyone's guess)

but I'll get to that in mid-july/ beginning of august time that send everyone there instead

Living Live

I’ve now had my Xbox 360 for a total of 2 months, and it’s serving me well; better than Dale’s was at a specific place in final fantasy, as he said he had a low frame rate, while i had no such trouble, i think it’s due to the more up-to-date chipset in mine. (which should mean no RRoD for me)

I was pleasantly surprised when i bought it, as i only expected to get the special pack (the Xbox, 250GB HDD, 2 controllers, Final Fantasy 13, the networking stuff, and the documentation paraphernalia) , but when i asked for it the shop assistant said that it also included one of either Halo 3 ODST or Forza motorsport. When i was told of these titles, i wasn’t impressed, as driving and FPS are my 2 worst genres of game, so I immediately thought “pre-own fodder”. I chose Halo as i thought I'd give it a try and see if I can get better at first person games, that and I'd be more likely to play it than Forza due to it’s possible stress-reliving properties (like i found with Left 4 Dead in the “Builders, bikes and booting up” entry). I still have Halo and have got a bit better, not great, but better, as I'm now not always last on the amount of kills.

I did have a problem with live when i first started though. As i created my Gamertag to play Games for windows, and just migrated my Gamertag onto the Xbox, i didn’t get the free month of gold. This meant that i was stuck scrounging 48-hour trial codes off my mates who already had gold and couldn’t use them in order to play Halo online (I had one myself from Halo, so there was another plus side to choosing halo) and to join chat parties. It was only when i saw a 3-month gold for £10.99 offer I got gold properly.

I did say in another Blog post that my new TV would allow me to use my PS2 on a bigger screen; unfortunately this was not the case. For some unknown reason, the PS2 disagrees with High Definition TVs, and when you play a game on one using the PS2 the graphics look blocky and makes the games nearly unplayable. So after trying for the best part of a week to get it to work (and even buying a new cable to try that), I've resigned it to being attached to the old CRT TV downstairs. So it might mean that I'll have to get a PS3 eventually in order to play the games on my new TV, but that is in the far future, and can wait a while.

There was also a shake up in the AV equipment in our house over Easter as mum was decorating, this meant that the CRT TV was upstairs (allowing me to use the PS2 again) and my TV/monitor had to be constantly shifted in order to allow us to watch TV downstairs when mum wasn’t decorating. This allowed me to see what the CRT TV would make of the 360, i was horrified at what i saw. The picture was so blurry it was hard to read text (and that was after adjusting the screen settings), and final fantasy was unplayable as you couldn’t read the commands; now i know what Dale meant when he said that it looked so much better on my TV.

Well I’ll try and see if i can get past the elite four on Pokémon HeartGold, as due to the recent workload I've ignored it while everyone else I know is near or at the end of the game

All systems are go

Finally done my Systems coursework, as both my paperwork and Project are handed in, all that remains is the admin to go with it and some replacement chips put in (there are very few of these chips in the department at present, so me and mike have been constantly exchanging them to get work done, the difference is that my project works when they’re in mine, while his doesn’t). This is more than can be said for some people, most notably Wylie, as he thinks that he can avoid the deadlines by taking off with the work he was too lazy to do, this annoyed me as i made sure all my work was done for the deadline (even if it meant staying up ‘til the early hours)

As it’s the extended weekend now, I'll be doing my computing so that i can get that in on Wednesday.
